Off the hype generated by the Man Booker Prize short list, or the National Book Awards nominations or the National Book Critics Circle Award or the Pulitzer Prize.  If I had to judge a book's readablility by its cover, going to Borders would be as depressing and distressing as going to Blockbuster and making a video pick.
